Where to buy gear in new york city?

Hello guys.
Im going to bike trough USA this summer with a friend. We need 2 Decent bikes. Second hand is totally okay ( around 500 $ each) and camping
gear. Can anybody recommend some good and honest shops in New york city? We are biking from east to west.

There aren't a lot

There aren't a lot of used bikes in stores in NYC generally. There is Recycle-A-Bicycle which if you get lucky may have something for you, e.g. a Trek 820 rigid MTB for $325 right now (almost certainly gone by the time you're there):

Most used bikes get sold on Craigslist. If you're willing and able to spend a bit of time shopping around, this will get you the most for $500.

If you want or need to buy new, a Trek 7.1 FX is within your budget, and could be a good choice if you like flat bars. Metro Bicycles (aka Danny's Cycles) is a decent local chain that sells these.

Eastern Mountain Sports

Eastern Mountain Sports is the big chain. They have most things and generally OK prices. There is also Paragon Sports which is a local but very large NYC shop. From Union Square you can walk to both.
