Shenghan visa - Australians heading to Europe

Hello all!

My husband and I are planning a big bike touring trip to Europe in 2020. Ideally we want to there for minimum 6 months and keep going till the dollars run out. We’re Australians and have a few questions regarding visa’s.

We are planning to arrive and start in Rome- do we apply for a Shenghan visa there? OR do you only apply for it as you’re reaching the end of the 90 day ‘free period’. Terribly confused and hoping there’s a fellow Aussie out there who encountered this issue.

Cheers

Grace and Andrew

Foreigners are limited to 90

Foreigners are limited to 90 days in Schengen in a 180-day period. There is not typically any way for cyclists to extend their stay beyond 90 days. Schengen visas are for those needing to stay in Schengen for serious reasons like university studies, work, marriage etc., and not for tourism. So, what most foreign cyclists do is spend 90 days in Schengen, and then they cross into the non-Schengen countries of Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, the former Yugoslavia, Albania, or Ukraine for the rest of their European tour.
